June 6, 2016 - Br. Edward L. McCarthy, SJ, was called to eternal life on June 5, 2016, at Mary Manning Walsh Home in New York City.
Br. McCarthy was born in New York City on Oct. 14, 1931. He was the son of Louis and Beatrice (McNally) McCarthy. He entered the Society of Jesus on Nov. 13, 1957, at St. Andrew-on-Hudson in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. From 1960-1965, he was an assistant cook to the house. He studied at Brooklyn Prep from 1965 to 1972 as a buyer and assistant minister. Br. McCarthy pronounced final vows on Aug. 15, 1969, at Brooklyn Prep, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
From 1972-1975, Br. McCarthy was an assistant minister at Xavier High School. He became superintendent of academy at Woodstock College from 1974-1975. In 1975-1978, he became superintendent of academy, Borough Hall School at West Side Jesuit Community in New York. Br. McCarthy worked as a maintenance worker at St. Patrick’s Cathedral from 1978 to present. He lived at the St. Ignatius Loyola Community at East 83rd Street.

Sept. 13, 2017 - Fr. Richard D. Bertrand, SJ, was called to eternal life on Sept. 11, 2017. Fr. Bertrand was born on Nov. 28,1947, in Biddeford, Maine, and entered the Society of Jesus on July 30, 1966. He was ordained to the priesthood on Nov. 10, 1979. He pronounced his Final Vows on June 19, 1992.
Sept. 13, 2017 - Mr. Brian P. Maher was installed as the 7th president of Nativity Preparatory School during the Mass of the Holy Spirit held at the beginning of the year. Fr. John J. Cecero, SJ, provincial of the USA Northeast Province of the Society of Jesus, officially missioned Mr. Maher to be the director of the work.
Sept. 5, 2017 - Fr. John P. Bucki, SJ, was called to eternal life on Sept. 2, 2017, at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y. Fr. Bucki was born on Jan. 12, 1950, in Buffalo, N.Y., and entered the Society of Jesus on Aug. 25, 1968. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 9, 1979. He pronounced his Final Vows on Dec. 12, 1995, at the Xavier Jesuit Community, New York, N.Y.
Today, Sept. 1, marks the official kickoff of the second year of the Ignatian Carbon Challenge. Redesigned for its second year, the Ignatian Carbon Challenge provides new dynamic opportunities to make more sustainable choices that create healthier individuals, communities, and a healthier planet. Through a series of monthly individual challenges, students learn about climate change and appropriate, concrete methods for living more sustainable lives. These challenges are designed to be woven into a variety of school settings, including classrooms, clubs, and formation and justice events and programs. Each challenge has two steps-one offering opportunities for personal change for increased sustainability, the second adding an interpersonal element to promote dialogue and collaboration.
July 31, 2017 - Br. Louis N. Mauro, SJ, was called to eternal life on July 28, 2017. Br. Mauro was born on Jan. 8, 1942, and entered the Society of Jesus on Aug.14, 1961 He was ordained to the diaconate on Oct. 17, 1982. He pronounced his final vows on Aug. 15, 1978.

The Portal to Jesuit Studies is meant to serve as a "Jesuit Google," strengthening the institute's efforts to serve as a resource on the history, spirituality, and pedagogy of the Society of Jesus.
