Remembering Jesuit Father Ronald W. Sams

June 28, 2017 - Fr. Ronald W. Sams, SJ, pastor emeritus of St. Michael Parish in Buffalo, New York, died June 27, 2017, in Kenmore Mercy Hospital. He was 88.

Fr. was born Dec. 29, 1928, in Buffalo, N.Y., to William and Loretta Sams. After graduating from Canisius High School in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1946, he entered St. Andrew on Hudson in Poughkeepsie and attended St. Louis University in Missouri. He also majored in theology at Woodstock College in Maryland.

Fr. Sams was ordained in 1959 at Fordham University Chapel in the Bronx, completed his tertianship in 1961 and professed final vows in 1963.

Fr. Sams served as school vocational promoter for the New York Province of the Jesuits from 1961-65, as well as assistant director and director of the Jesuit Seminary and Mission Bureau. In 1965, he began serving at Canisius High School, where he continued serving as provincial school vocational promoter and director of external missions for the local province of the Jesuits. From 1970-74, he served as director of spirituality in Guam at the Jesuits' pre-novitiate house on the South Pacific island.

After returning to New York in 1974, he returned to Canisius High School to serve as the school's director of development. He went on sabbatical from 1982-83 before serving in the Caroline Islands from 1983-95, where he served as a secretary and assistant for financial development for the Jesuit bishop there.

That year, he returned to his alma mater to serve as chaplain to parents and alumni at the high school, as well as subminister for a brief period in 1998, until 2001.

In 2001, Fr. Sams became a minister and chaplain to parents and alumni for the Canisius Jesuit community, and continued serving as advisor for the Gambit auction at Canisius High School. He remained there until 2003, when he began serving as superior and later pastor for St. Michael Church in Buffalo until 2013, when he was named pastor emeritus. He remained in residence there with the faculties of a parochial vicar.

Fr. Sams served on the Presbyteral Council, a primary consultative body to the diocesan bishop, and served as a member of the College of Consultors since 2000.

Oct. 18, 2017 — This fall, six Jesuit high schools - Fairfield Prep, Fordham Preparatory School, Loyola School, Regis High School, Saint Peter's Prep, and Xavier High School - are competing to help fill local food banks and pantries with provisions for families in need.

Sept. 13, 2017 - Fr. Richard D. Bertrand, SJ, was called to eternal life on Sept. 11, 2017. Fr. Bertrand was born on Nov. 28,1947, in Biddeford, Maine, and entered the Society of Jesus on July 30, 1966. He was ordained to the priesthood on Nov. 10, 1979. He pronounced his Final Vows on June 19, 1992.

Sept. 13, 2017 - Mr. Brian P. Maher was installed as the 7th president of Nativity Preparatory School during the Mass of the Holy Spirit held at the beginning of the year. Fr. John J. Cecero, SJ, provincial of the USA Northeast Province of the Society of Jesus, officially missioned Mr. Maher to be the director of the work.

Sept. 5, 2017 - Fr. John P. Bucki, SJ, was called to eternal life on Sept. 2, 2017, at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y. Fr. Bucki was born on Jan. 12, 1950, in Buffalo, N.Y., and entered the Society of Jesus on Aug. 25, 1968. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 9, 1979. He pronounced his Final Vows on Dec. 12, 1995, at the Xavier Jesuit Community, New York, N.Y.

Today, Sept. 1, marks the official kickoff of the second year of the Ignatian Carbon Challenge. Redesigned for its second year, the Ignatian Carbon Challenge provides new dynamic opportunities to make more sustainable choices that create healthier individuals, communities, and a healthier planet. Through a series of monthly individual challenges, students learn about climate change and appropriate, concrete methods for living more sustainable lives. These challenges are designed to be woven into a variety of school settings, including classrooms, clubs, and formation and justice events and programs. Each challenge has two steps-one offering opportunities for personal change for increased sustainability, the second adding an interpersonal element to promote dialogue and collaboration.

July 31, 2017 - Br. Louis N. Mauro, SJ, was called to eternal life on July 28, 2017. Br. Mauro was born on Jan. 8, 1942, and entered the Society of Jesus on Aug.14, 1961 He was ordained to the diaconate on Oct. 17, 1982. He pronounced his final vows on Aug. 15, 1978.
