Jesuit Father Gerard S. Barry passed away on Dec. 26, 2013, in Tokyo at age 86. He was a Jesuit for 63 years and a priest for 50 years. He entered the Maryland Province in 1950 and subsequently transcribed to the Japanese Province.
Fr. Barry is best remembered as the founding president of the Sophia Junior College, where he served from 1973 until 1985, and also had at various times many positions of responsibility, including minister of the Jesuit community of Sophia University, rector of the same community and professor in the English Language department of Sophia University.
After retiring from the university he worked as parish priest at St. Ignatius Church in Tokyo while serving as chaplain at a local prison. He was much loved and respected by everyone who knew him.
