In Memoriam

Father Evans was the regional director of Eastern Africa Jesuit Refugee Services in Nairobi, Kenya and the national director of Jesuit Refugee Service/USA.

Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of Fr. Michael A. Evans, SJ, who died on Monday, September 1, 2014, at Providence Hospital in Detroit, after a health procedure. He was 60 years old.

Father Evans was born on August 20, 1954, in Detroit. He entered the Society of Jesus on September 6, 1975, at Loyola House in Berkley, Mich. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 18, 1983, and professed final vows on May 24, 1993, at the University of Detroit Mercy Chapel.

Before entering the Society, Fr. Evans earned bachelor’s degrees in English and history from the University of Detroit Mercy. After the novitiate, he earned a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Detroit Mercy (1977-1978). He studied theology in Innsbruck, Austria, for a year (1980-1981), before earning a master of divinity degree (1981–83), a master of theological studies (1983–84) and a licentiate of sacred theology (1991–93) from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, Calif. He earned a master of arts degree in international relations and development from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (1984–86) and a Ph.D. in economic development and social ethics (1986–91) from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley (1991).

During his regency Fr. Evans taught history and English at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. After his studies, Fr. Evans was the regional director of Eastern Africa Jesuit Refugee Services in Nairobi, Kenya (1991–96). He spent four years in the Detroit Province as president of Loyola High School in Detroit (1996–2000).

Father Evans returned to the Eastern Africa Province, where he was the province’s treasurer and development director (2000–10). He was also the treasurer of JESAM, the African Assistancy (2004–10). Father Evans returned to the United States in October 2010, and was the national director of Jesuit Refugee Service/USA (2010–12). In 2012, Fr. Evans moved to Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich., to deal with health issues.
