In Memoriam

Jesuit Father Edmund W. Nagle was called to eternal life on Oct. 11, 2016. He was 85 years old.

Fr. Nagle was born in Irvington, New Jersey, on Nov. 15, 1930. He was the son of George and Louise (Schroeck) Nagle. He attended Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City from 1948-1951. On July 30, 1951, he entered St. Andrew-on-the-Hudson in Poughkeepsie, New York, and was ordained on June 20, 1963, at Fordham University Chapel in the Bronx. He pronounced his final vows on March 12, 1979, in St. Joseph’s Chapel at McQuaid Jesuit High School, Rochester, New York.

From 1957-1960, he taught Latin, English and speech at McQuaid Jesuit High School. He then came to Kohlmann Hall in the Bronx where he was secretary to the provincial from 1965-1966 and then assistant to the provincial until 1967.

Fr. Nagle was dean of students at Colegio San Ignacio in Puerto Rico from 1967-1969. At Canisius High School in Buffalo, New York, he was student counselor and taught theology from 1969-1978. He returned to McQuaid Jesuit High School as superior from 1978-1980.

From 1980-1981, Fr. Nagle returned to Canisius High School as a student counselor. He went on sabbatical at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley from 1981-1982. For the next seven years, he served at Murray-Weigel Hall as director of spirituality, minister and spiritual director.

Fr. Nagle assisted with local apostolates, the Spiritual Exercises and was assistant treasurer at Loyola Retreat House in Morristown from 1989-2010. From 2010-2014, Fr. Nagle was associate pastor at St. Michael’s Parish in Buffalo.

In 2014, he returned to Murray-Weigel Hall to pray for the Church and the Society until his death.
