Fr. Robert E. Hamm, SJ, was called to eternal life on October 25, 2025, at Manresa Hall in Merion Station, PA. He was 88 years old, a Jesuit for 70 years, and a priest for 57 years.
Bob was born in Williamsport, PA, on September 21, 1937. He attended St. Joseph’s High School in Williamsport before entering the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, PA, on September 7, 1955. He studied philosophy at Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak, New York, earning a B.A. in 1961, followed by an M.A. in English from Fordham University in 1963. After teaching English and Latin at Scranton Preparatory School, Bob began theology studies at Woodstock College in Maryland, where he received a B.A. in Theology and an M.A. in 1969. He was ordained to the priesthood there on June 15, 1968.
Following ordination, Fr. Hamm began a long and fruitful ministry as a teacher, spiritual director, and retreat leader. He taught English at St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia (1971–1975) and later served as Assistant Director (1975–1979) and then Director (1984–1988) of the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth in Wernersville, PA. Between those appointments, he taught Religion and English at Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore (1979–1984).
In 1988, Fr. Hamm was missioned to the Jesuit Centre in Benin City, Nigeria, where he directed retreats and the Spiritual Exercises for more than two decades. His ministry in Nigeria (1988–2011) reflected his deep commitment to Ignatian spirituality and his pastoral care for those seeking God in all things. After returning to the United States, he served in pastoral ministry at St. Ignatius Church in Baltimore (2011–2015).
In his later years, Fr. Hamm continued to serve as a spiritual director and pastoral minister while residing at the St. Claude La Colombière Jesuit Community in Baltimore, where he was later missioned to pray for the Church and the Society of Jesus. He continued this ministry after moving to Manresa Hall in 2022.
Fr. Hamm was known for his gentle presence, contemplative spirit, and steadfast devotion to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. His decades of service—as teacher, retreat director, and missionary—touched countless lives across two continents.
May he rest in the peace of Christ, whom he served faithfully and joyfully for so many years.
