October 2, 2025

Fr. Thomas P. McDonnell, SJ, taught at Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore for more than 20 years. He also served in pastoral ministry at churches in Richmond, VA, and Charlotte, NC.

Fr. Thomas P. McDonnell, SJ, was called to eternal life on October 2, 2025, at the Campion Center in Weston, MA. He was 88 years old, a Jesuit for 70 years, and a priest for 57 years.

Tom was born in Philadelphia, PA, on August 23, 1937, and attended St. Joseph’s Prep. Upon graduation, he entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, PA, on August 14, 1955.

He studied philosophy at Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak, NY, earning a B.A. in American History. He then taught Latin, history, and religion at Loyola Blakefield in Baltimore before beginning theology studies at Woodstock College in Woodstock, MD. He was ordained to the priesthood there on June 15, 1968.

Following ordination, Fr. McDonnell returned to Loyola Blakefield, where he spent more than two decades shaping the minds and hearts of students. He taught history, Latin, and physical education, and also served as coach of the junior varsity football team. His ministry at Loyola Blakefield (1969–1995) reflected his deep love for Jesuit education and mentoring young men.

After a sabbatical at the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, Fr. McDonnell was assigned to Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Richmond, VA, where he served for eight years, first as parochial vicar, then parish administrator, and pastor. In 2003, he moved to Charlotte, NC, to serve St. Peter Church for 12 years as parochial vicar.

In his later years, Fr. McDonnell was missioned to the Jesuit Community of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, where he continued serving in pastoral ministry. In 2020, he moved to the St. Claude La Colombière Jesuit Community in Baltimore and then to Campion Center, carrying out a ministry of prayer for the Church and the Society of Jesus.

Known for his humility and kindness, Fr. McDonnell served faithfully in Jesuit education and parishes for nearly six decades. His quiet dedication and pastoral warmth left a lasting impression on generations of students, parishioners, and his brother Jesuits.

May he rest in the peace of Christ, whom he served with joy and devotion.
