Born in Milwaukee on July 14, 1934, Tom attended Sacred Heart Grade School and Marquette University High School before entering the Society at St. Stanislaus Seminary in Florissant, Mo., on August 17, 1952. He had the usual Jesuit course of studies at St. Stanislaus, Saint Louis University, and St. Mary’s College. Tom was ordained a priest on June 8, 1965, made tertianship from 1966 to 1967, and pronounced final vows on April 22, 1971.

Tom did his regency at Red Cloud Indian School on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
