Jesuit Schools Compete in Ignatian Social Justice Tournament

April 26, 2018 - Earlier this week, Fairfield Prep, Fordham Prep, Loyola High School, Regis High School and Xavier High School took part in the Ignatian Social Justice Tournament, a friendly competition to raise money for charities in need.  

Each school sent a group of students to conduct a 10-minute presentation before a panel of judges. Judges then had five minutes to ask questions following each presentation. 

Fairfield Prep received $10,000 to help support The Cardinal Sheehan Center in Bridgeport.

Fordham Prep seniors Chike Odume, Jonah Shortall, John Tomsen and Michael Tozzi spoke about Fordham’s long-standing relationship with the Bronx-based organization Part of the Solution (P.O.T.S.). They earned $20,000 for P.O.T.S. to use to increase its capacity to provide services for those in need. 

Loyola School raised funds for the Romero Center, which serves families in need in Camden, N.J. They recieved $15,000 for the center. 

Regis High School raised $15,000 for smart boards and additional equipment for students of St. Ann’s School in Manhattan.

Xavier juniors Elias Garcia, Jack Martorano, and Ramses Pena talked about the Kino Border Initiative and received $10,000 to help support the work. 

Fordham Prep alumnus Jim Rowen ‘82 sponsored this event in which every school earned a sizable award for its cause.

Feb. 8, 2019 - Fr. Charles L. Moutenot, SJ, was called to eternal life on Feb. 4, 2019. He was born on June 16, 1946, in New York, N.Y., entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew Hall, Syracuse, N.Y., on Aug. 20, 1975, and was ordained on June 9, 1984. He pronounced his final vows on Oct. 19, 1995.

Feb. 7, 2019 - Fr. Paul Gilmartin, SJ, died, at Campion Center, in the early morning of February 4, 2019. He was born, on March 21, 1932. In 1949, he graduated from high school and entered the Shadowbook novitiate. He was ordained a priest at Weston, on June 16, 1962.

Feb. 7, 2019 - In his most recent monthly prayer video, Pope Francis spoke on his February intention, Human Trafficking. "Although we try to ignore it, slavery is not something from other times...we cannot ignore the fact that there is as much slavery in the world today as there was before, or perhaps more."
