Jesuits East Facebook Page Surpasses 10,000 Likes

Oct. 31, 2018 - Today, the Jesuits East Facebook page of the Maryland and USA Northeast Provinces surpassed 10,000 Likes. For several years, the page has offered updates from the Maryland and USA Northeast Provinces, inviting followers to be part of a community of people united by a shared Ignatian identity.

When founding the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius called Jesuits and their lay colleagues to be of the world and in the world so that they could meet people where they are. While technology has changed, this mission has not.

In the years since the Jesuits East Facebook page was started, it has shared international news, including the election of the first Jesuit pope, Pope Francis, and the election of the current Jesuit Superior General, Father Arturo Sosa. It has been a place for people to find prayers when natural disasters strike or during other national and international events. It has even allowed members to remotely view photos and videos from the pivotal formation stages of Jesuits in the provinces; from their first vows, to the ordination and jubilarian Masses. Most importantly, it allows our friends to see all the good stories coming out of our Jesuit schools, universities, parishes and apostolates.

“Our social media presence on Facebook is just one of the ways that the Maryland and USA Northeast Provinces continue to spread the gospel and minister to others like St. Ignatius,” said Jim Skurka, provincial assistant for advancement and communications for the Maryland and USA Northeast Provinces. “Jesuit educated alumni, parishioners and retreatants live throughout the world and we strive to reach them and keep them informed about the good work of the Jesuits from our regions and their lay colleagues.” People who like and follow the Facebook page come not only from the United States but also represent countries around the globe, including the Philippines, India, the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

“We are grateful to these 10,000 friends of the Society who want to stay in touch with us, become engaged, and share news of what we do with friends and family,” said Skurka. “We hope that through our online presence we can help these men and women for others stay connected to the Jesuits, no matter where they live.”

And don’t forget to follow Jesuits East on Twitter as well.
