Dear Friends in Christ,
We are just about halfway through 2019, and there is already so much for which to be grateful this year. On June 8, we ordained to the priesthood five Jesuits from our two East Coast provinces. There is such joy and hope for the Society of Jesus and for the Church as we celebrate these new priests and as we welcome an even greater number who are discerning a call to enter our novitiate.
We Jesuits are eager to implement the new Universal Apostolic Preferences announced this year by our Father General, Arturo Sosa, S.J., and confirmed by Pope Francis. These preferences direct all our ministries to focus in the first place on the Spiritual Exercises and discernment, and they exhort us to serve the poor and marginalized, to instill hope among young people, and to strive for environmental sustainability.
Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., a former Superior General who led the Jesuit Order from 1965 to 1983, had his cause for beatification and canonization opened earlier this year. A man much like St. Ignatius in many ways, Fr. Arrupe encouraged Jesuits in the post-Vatican II era to continue utilizing their gifts as theologians, missionaries, teachers, pastors, artists and scientists to bring God’s glory to all those seeking His care and mercy.
We are truly inspired by our new Universal Apostolic Preferences, by Fr. Arrupe’s cause for canonization, and by our newly ordained Jesuits as they embark on their first priestly assignments.
Please know that your generous gifts are much appreciated in advancing our shared mission of serving God’s people and reaching out to those on the margins. Our young men in formation and our elderly and infirmed Jesuits are so very grateful for your continued support.
Please keep us in your prayers, as we hold you in ours for a safe and restful summer.
Sincerely in Christ,
