Advancement Delegates from the Six Jesuit Conferences Meet in Rome
June 4, 2019 - From May 21 to 24, delegates representing the 56 Province Advancement Offices of the Society of Jesus met in Rome. They were joined by Father General Arturo Sosa, SJ, for the second meeting of the delegates of the Development Offices of the six Jesuit Conferences.
“It was a privilege to join my colleagues and Father General Arturo Sosa, SJ, in Rome,” said James Skurka, a delegate and the Provincial Assistant for Advancement and Communications for the Maryland and USA Northeast Provinces. “Meeting our counterparts was not only a reminder of the diversity of the Universal Church but also the international reach of the Society of Jesus.”
The purpose of the meeting was to provide Father General Sosa with answers to how over the next ten years the Advancement Offices will invite men and women from around the world to participate in the mission entrusted to them by the Holy Father. This was done within the framework of the Universal Apostolic Preferences, which were announced earlier this year and consist of promoting discernment and the Spiritual Exercises, walking with the excluded, caring for our common home and journeying with youth. “Meeting with Father General Sosa about the Society’s Universal Apostolic Preferences gave us a chance to reflect on how we will incorporate them into the work that we are doing,” continued Skurka.

Over the course of the four-day meetings, the delegates discussed topics about the future of the Society and took time to pray and reflect together.
“Despite coming from different cultures and traditions, we have a shared mission and spirituality that unites us,” said Skurka.

May 27, 2020 - Now more than ever, we invoke God to wipe away the darkness of anxiety, allowing us to be guided by the light of Christ and to trust in God’s promise of new life. Over the last few months, our Jesuit provinces have been in a place we don’t often find ourselves, a place that saw our schools closed, parishes empty, and the halls of our retreat centers giving new meaning to the word “silent.”
