Living Out the Apostolic Preferences

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

-John 1:14

Dear Friends in the Lord,

As we come together to celebrate that moment when the Word became flesh, we remember that our Lord continues to dwell among us today, in all our lived experiences. He is present in those we know and love, as well as in the strangers we encounter along our journey.

We are concluding a significant year for the Society of Jesus, in which the Holy Father has given a special mission to the Society and our partners in the form of Universal Apostolic Preferences. As you know, our mission has been long dedicated to spreading the Gospel, reaching out to those on the margins, and educating men and women for others. Given the specific contemporary challenges and issues facing our world, these Preferences are intended to focus our life and mission over the next ten years.

Receiving these Preferences from Pope Francis, Father General Arturo Sosa, S.J., promulgated them for the whole Society of Jesus, and they are:

These new preferences invite all of us to recognize anew where God is dwelling among us—in the search for God; among those who are seemingly forgotten by this world; in our young people seeking hope for the future; and of course, in one of God’s greatest gifts to us—this beautiful home we call earth.

Together as collaborators in the implementation of these preferences, we strive to grow in holiness and thereby engage more fruitfully in our worldwide mission of reconciliation and justice. We are deeply consoled by and grateful for your partnership and support.

We thank God for you, and with you, we recognize and reverence Jesus dwelling among us.

Sincerely,
