Resources for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation

Aug. 27, 2015 – Pope Francis has declared Sept. 1 the annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. In his recent encyclical Laudato Si, Pope Francis delivered a call to action for people to be part of the solution to climate change. World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation will be an opportunity for individual believers and communities to thank God for the wonderful handiwork entrusted to our care, to ask for God's help to protection creation and God's pardon for the harm committed against the world in which we live.

  • Promotio Iustitiae 106: Healing a Broken World: Developed through a task force at the appeal of Jesuit Father General Adolfo Nicol├ís, SJ,Healing a Broken World suggests many different commitments and initiatives that can be undertaken at different levels of the Society of Jesus: Conferences, Provinces, communities and works. It is a sincere invitation to make ecology a topic and reason for discernment. Communities are encouraged to review the Concrete Suggestions for action developed by the task force.
  • Promotio Iustitiae 111: A Spirituality that Reconciles us with Creation: Released in 2013, this series of reflections from Jesuits across the world examines feelings of gratitude to the Creator for the whole natural world and all the beings that dwell in it and finding the inspiration we need to develop new and better ways of relating to the world.

  • Ecojesuit: Connecting Jesuits, people, and ecology online to promote greater awareness and responsibility to engage in meaningful ecology issues of our time.
  • Global Ignatian Advocacy Network (GIAN): Ecology is among the many topics GIAN is mobilizing Jesuits and lay colleagues around the world.
  • Loyola University Chicago's International Jesuit Ecology Project: A three-year collaborative project between LUC faculty and scholars from worldwide Jesuit institutions to create an online Living Textbook that addresses environmental issues from a scientific, moral, and spiritual perspective.


Advocacy Opportunities

  • Catholics Confront Global Poverty- A joint program of the USCCB and CRS, Catholics Confront Global Poverty have had regular action alerts on environmental justice issues since the release of Laudato Si, the most recent calling on Congress to fully fund the Green Climate Investment Fund.
  • Catholic Climate Covenant- CCC’s overhauled website has an excellent advocacy action alert center, as well as the opportunity to get support helping institutions move toward environmental sustainability.
  • Use the Pope’s visit to the U.S. to Call on Congress to Care for Creation- On Sept. 24, the Pope will address a joint session of Congress for the first time in our nation’s history. Use this historic moment to amplify the Pope’s call to address environmental injustice. Immediately following his address to Congress, organize a call-in campaign to your members of Congress. Organize a letter writing campaign during the month of October. Schedule a meeting at the district office of your legislators in November in solidarity with more than 1,000 Ignatian advocates visiting legislators on Capitol Hill as part of the Ignatian Family Teach-in for Justice.

    Jan. 15, 2019 - Fr. James J. Curry, SJ, was called to eternal life on Jan. 14, 2019. He was born on July 13, 1944, in New York, N.Y., entered the Society of Jesus on Aug. 14, 1962, and was ordained on June 8, 1974, at Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y. He pronounced his final vows on May 31, 1984, at McQuaid Jesuit High School, Rochester, N.Y.

    January 15, 2019 -- Today, the USA Northeast Province of the Society of Jesus releases names of Jesuits credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor, dating to 1950.

    Jan. 14, 2019 - On Mon., Jan. 28, the Alliance for Fair Food will be holding a panel discussion at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in NYC, to explore the connection between faith and the advancement of human rights, specifically in the agricultural industry.

    Jan. 9, 2019 - In his first video of 2019, Pope Francis spoke on his January intention, Young People and the Example of Mary. "Let us pray that young people, especially in Latin America, follow the example of Mary and respond to the call of the Lord to communicate the joy of the Gospel to the world."

    Jan. 7, 2019 - Fr. Lawrence E. Corcoran, SJ, was called to eternal life on Jan. 6, 2019. He was born on July 27, 1932, in Brookline, Mass., entered the Society of Jesus at Shadowbrook, Lenox, Mass., on July 30, 1950, and was ordained on June 15, 1963, at Weston College in Weston, Mass. He pronounced his final vows on Nov. 6, 1970.

    Jan. 4, 2019 - Fr. Wayne P. Tkel, SJ was called to eternal life on Jan. 1, 2019, on the island of Peleliu in Palau. He was born on Sept. 3, 1963, in Koror, Palau, entered the Society of Jesus in 1990 at the Manresa Jesuit Novitiate in Koror, Palau, and was ordained on June 22, 2002, in Koror, Palau. He pronounced his final vows in 2009, also in Koror, Palau.

    Jan. 2, 2019 - Fr. William J. McGarry, SJ, died on Dec. 29, 2018 in Pasig City in Metro Manila, Philippines. He entered the Society in 1945 and was ordained to the presbyterate in 1958.
