Nov. 2, 2017 - This past October, St. Ignatius School in the Bronx, pursued the magis and took its annual Anti-Bullying Month a step further by donning the new name, Unity Month. While the school set the standard that bullying is not welcome in their community, individuals were challenged to step outside of their comfort zones and share the many beautiful identities that make them who they are.
Throughout the month, students and faculty explored their own identities and were given a chance to discuss them with each other. This pushed individuals to talk to other members of the school community who they do not normally talk to. While it was difficult for some of the community to reach out like this, they reminded that St. Ignatius is a safe place.
The capstone of the month was the Unity Day mural, pictured below. The mural illustrates that each individual is unique, and when they come together, all of their identities make a community diverse and beautiful. It is a visual testimony of the cura personalis that the students and teachers celebrate as a Jesuit school. The mural is also a reminder that there is no room for bullying in the classroom and all are welcome at St. Ignatius School.
