Desolation
I bear an ongoing feeling of desolation that our US Bishops do not choose to emphasize all life matters, especially the life and death matter of racism. At their November meeting, the Bishops stated that their priority for Catholic voters at the polls: “The threat of abortion remains our preeminent priority.”
I completely understand and believe in the sanctity of human life. I believe that abortion is an extremely important part of being a pro-life Catholic. But racism is also a life and death situation. There are a large number of Catholics of color in our country. I read about a Bishop here and there who chooses to speak up and speak out about racism, especially now as it affects migrants coming to our country, but there are no major pronouncements, letters or communications about the life issue of racism.
Consolation
Synod conversations are beginning again! I am especially happy to hear from the delegates who attended round 1 in Rome, and of special inspiration to me is Dr. Cynthia Bailey-Manns.
Her bishop nominated her to go, and her activism in the Church is amazing!
