The Jesuit Antiracism Sodality East

Consolation & Desolation, September 2023

“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?” – Isaiah 58:6-7 (Reading for the Memorial of St. Peter Claver)

Desolation

You are invited to pray with the words of Eddie Ngo, SJ, of St. Francis Xavier Church in Phoenix. His painful, powerful, personal reflection is motivated in part by the 2021 shootings in Atlanta victimizing members of the Asian American community.

Consolation

The Descendants Truth & Reconciliation Foundation recently shared the good news of a partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to make available $400,000 in grants supporting the educational needs of the Descendant community. Anyone wishing to contribute to this and similar worthy causes can do so here: www.descendants.org/donate.

This month’s reflection was provided by Sean Toole, SJ, of the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Estill, S.C. If you would like to volunteer to provide an upcoming reflection, please contact Sean: stoole@jesuits.org.

The views and opinions expressed in this reflection do not necessarily reflect those of Jesuits USA East.
