Feb. 26, 2026 – In Mid-February, the USA East Province hosted a series of gatherings in Florida with friends and supporters of the Jesuits. These events were an opportunity for representatives from the province to join the local community in faith and fellowship. It was also a chance to begin the Lenten season with men and women united in a shared Ignatian spirituality.
These gatherings began in Naples, Fla., on February 13, as Jesuit Frs. Philip Florio, Brendan Gottschall, and Danny Gustafson joined members of the province advancement staff in visiting supporters. Over the weekend, they met with friends of the Jesuits and shared updates on the state of the province.
On February 15, the events moved to Palm Beach, Fla., where Frs. Florio, Gottschall, and Gustafson concelebrated Mass at St. Edward’s Basilica. Parishioners and friends joined in prayer, united in gratitude for the province’s ministries and hopeful for the work that lies ahead. Also in attendance were Martin and Maria Pannunzio, parents of second-year novice, Joaquin Pannunzio (pictured right).
On February 17, the focus turned to celebration at The Beach Club, where more than 60 guests attended a Mardi Gras cocktail reception hosted by Anne Moran. Fr. Florio and Fr. Gustafson were part of the festivities, alongside province representatives. Fr. Florio shared updates on the recent successes of the province and outlined priorities for the coming years. He also talked about the needs of the province, especially support to care for the elderly and infirm Jesuits and the annual cost to put a young Jesuit through formation.
The visit to Florida concluded on Ash Wednesday at The Colony Hotel. Fr. Gustafson delivered the homily and distributed ashes along with Fr. Florio, who also distributed ashes to members of the hotel staff and guests. After the distribution of ashes, the attendees shared breakfast. The gathering offered a meaningful beginning to Lent through prayer, reflection, and community. Together, attendees marked the start of the season while deepening their connection to the mission and vision of the USA East Province.
