Dear Friends,

Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. Isaiah 40:31

This short scripture verse from the Book of Isaiah is certainly one to keep in mind these days. Hope in the Lord. So many distractions and uncertainties can weigh us down, weaken our resolve, but when we look to the Lord, when we put our hope and trust in Christ, we can feel strengthened and at peace, regardless of circumstances.

For the Jesuits of the USA East Province, there is much to be hopeful about. On June 11, we ordained three Jesuits to the priesthood, two from our province and one from Canada. It is truly a joyous occasion to see these men of faith, who have served and studied through a 10-year formation journey, reach the culmination of their vocations to become priests, ready to serve the Church and the people of God. On August 13, two novices of our province will pronounce First Vows, having completed their first two years in our novitiate. This gives us great hope as well, witnessing what started as a discerning call of the Holy Spirit become a real commitment to the Society of Jesus and to the Lord’s work, as they continue in their formation.

We are currently blessed to have more than 40 Jesuits in formation for the East Coast Province. Supporting these men spiritually, educationally, and financially is vital to their growth as Jesuits. I humbly offer my heartfelt thanks for both your financial support and continued prayers for these men in formation. Please be assured of our prayers for you. We can all be hopeful as we look to those who have said “Yes” to the call and are dedicating their lives to be servants of Christ. And may Christ’s peace be with you and your loved ones during these summer months.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Joseph M. O’Keefe, S.J.
