Rev. Liborio J. LaMartina, SJ, (John) was born on March 19, 1935, in Baltimore, MD. He attended Calvert Hall College High School and received a BA in History from Loyola College in Maryland. He entered the Society of Jesus at the Novitiate of St. Isaac Jogues in Wernersville, PA, on August 14, 1957. He went on to receive a master’s in teaching at the Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak, NY, a Bachelor of Sacred Theology from Woodstock College in Woodstock, MD, and a Master of Sacred Theology, also from Woodstock College. He was ordained a priest on June 10, 1967.

During his Regency as a Jesuit, Fr. LaMartina taught history at St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia, PA. Following ordination and the completion of his studies, he began a nearly 30 tenure at St. Ignatius Church in Baltimore, serving as Parochial Vicar. During this time, he also served as chaplain at Maryland General Hospital. In 1996, Fr. LaMartina became the resident archivist for the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, serving for 24 years until the creation of the USA East Province in 2020.

In 2019, Fr. LaMartina moved to the Colombière Jesuit Community in Baltimore, where he was missioned to pray for the Church and the Society of Jesus. He died peacefully at Union Memorial Hospital on June 15, 2024.
