Sept. 25, 2025 – On Mon., Sept. 22, 2025, more than 100 golfers and supporters attended the 2025 Friends of the Jesuits Golf Outing: The Keenan, in memory of Fr. James F. Keenan, SJ, at the Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y.
For the past 17 years, the Friends of the Jesuits Golf Outing has raised funds to support men in formation and the care of our senior Jesuits. These events have collectively raised more than $4 million over the years.
This year’s outing was the first to feature the Keenan Cup, named in honor of Fr. Keenan, who passed away two years ago. During his 65 years as a Jesuit, Fr. Keenan touched the lives of thousands of students, alumni, parents, and friends through his work at Jesuit schools and in the province advancement office.
Five Jesuit schools – Brooklyn Jesuit Prep, Fairfield Prep, Regis High School, Scranton Preparatory School and the University of Scranton – had foursomes participate in the inaugural tournament. Congratulations to the team from Scranton Preparatory School, who secured the cup for their school!

After enjoying a beautiful day on the course, participants came together for the cocktail reception, where they reconnected with friends, Jesuits, and province staff. The night included a silent auction offering exceptional prizes, such as rounds of golf at some of the nation’s top courses.
During the evening program, Fr. Philip Florio, SJ, director of engagement and pastoral care spoke about how money raised at the golf outing supports the province’s senior Jesuits and men in formation. “Our elderly men are being supported by people like yourselves,” said Fr. Florio. “They receive dignified care, and you should take some solace and consolation in that because we stand on those tall shoulders of great men who devoted their lives to the church and to many of us here.” Fr. Florio then spoke on the state of religious formation in the country and what makes the Society of Jesus different. “Eighty percent of religious communities in the United States have zero to five people in formation – not the Society of Jesus! Right now, we have 35 men aspiring to the priesthood,” said Fr. Florio. “Without the support of our donors and benefactors we could not be training the Jesuit priests that you deserve.”
We are grateful to our co-chairs Paul Scariano and Bill Miller for their leadership. We are also grateful for all the sponsors and participants, especially our Jesuits, who helped convey the importance of the funds raised to benefit the ministries of the province.
We hope to see you at next year’s outing!
