Reflections
Rev. William A. Barry, SJ

Week 5 - December 29, 2014
Entered -- August 1950
Took Vows -- August 1952
Ordained -- June 1962

Fr. Barry is a former provincial, former tertian master, prolific writer on the Spiritual Exercises, and a renowned spiritual director.

A few years ago on the 60th birthday of a Jesuit friend, three of us got to talking about the happiest years of our lives. One spoke about his tertianship year in Australia, and another about the year he spent giving retreats and spiritual direction in some Asian countries. When my turn came, without hesitation I said, "I believe that I have never been happier than I am right now." I was at least 75 years old at the time and had been living in my present community at Campion Center, which though composed mostly of elderly Jesuits, is still the happiest large Jesuit community I have ever seen. My tune has not changed since then. I have reflected on that spontaneous statement and believe that such genuine happiness is the accumulated blessing of my long and generally happy life as a Jesuit.

Jesuits, for all our faults and flaws, are really wonderful companions, hard workers (for the most part), serious about prayer, caring for those we serve and for one another, with here and there a living saint to light up our lives. God has been extraordinarily generous to me over my 64 years as a Jesuit, and I have, thank God, grown in faith and trust in Him. That is no small blessing since it means that I am much less fearful and more full of life now in spite of my age. Moreover, that God still wants the Society of Jesus to exist and to continue to serve the Church gives me joy and great hope for the future, long after I am gone. No wonder I am happy!
