Fr. Moutenot serves the Society of Jesus as the Director of the USA Tertianship Program in Portland, OR.  He has extensive experience in the work of the Spiritual Exercises and in internal governance of the Society.

My life in the Society of Jesus began as a response to God's healing touch. I had gone astray, and found myself uttering "God help me."

Those three words changed my life forever. It was as if the Father extended a hand toward mine, took it gently and firmly, and placed me with His Son on the path I have walked for 40 years.

One day I discovered a book on the Jesuits in the town library and became enthralled with The Spiritual Exercises which helped Jesuits give everything to God. I desired such a commitment. Around the same time my father invited me to attend a retreat with him. A Jesuit reached out his hand and welcomed me. His preaching that weekend was afire with the Spirit of God. Shortly after, I entered the Society of Jesus and was ordained a priest nine years later.

Although there have been difficulties, I experience great joy living the vows. I feel deeply connected to Jesus Christ especially through the vow of chastity. He is the great Other in my life. Through the vow of obedience I give myself to God and service of others-willing to be sent anywhere for the good of the Church. The vow of poverty frees me from encumbrances that would compromise that availability. I also love the simple life.

My greatest joy is discerning with Jesuits and lay colleagues where God is moving and responding with them creatively.

My prayer still remains "God help me." But over the years I have learned the prayer of gratitude for putting me on this wonderful path.
