This past summer I celebrated the 70th anniversary of my entrance into the Society of Jesus. It has been such a happy seventy years that I can't imagine having lived any other life.

For seventy years I have enjoyed the companionship in work and in prayer of such a fine body of men, and that not just in the USA, but in countless Jesuit houses throughout Europe, where I always felt completely at home.

It had never occurred to me to become a teacher, but as a Jesuit, I taught for more than forty years and loved it--except for the part about correcting exams! When I retired from teaching I thought I might serve in a parish, but my provincial superior asked me to try something else for a year. I then spent the next thirteen years ministering to immigrants in federal detention, something that enriched my life in so many ways and gave me the opportunity to use formation in Ignatian spirituality, my knowledge of Sacred Scripture, my singing ability, and my command of French and Spanish. I always felt, however, that I received more than I gave in my service of these children of God.

Two years ago another provincial superior "missioned me" to the retirement home for New York Province Jesuits. Here my principal assignment is "to pray for the Church and the Society," something I do gladly. I am surrounded by a large number of Jesuits, some of whom I have known for many years. We pray together and we laugh together-so many wonderful memories, praise the Lord!
