Reflections
Rev. Thomas R. Slon, SJ

Week 47  – October 19, 2015
Entered -- August 1979
Took Vows -- August 1981
Ordained -- June 1990

After serving as Socius for six years for the New York and now the UNE Provinces, Fr. Slon is on a well-deserved sabbatical awaiting his next assignment.

"What makes me happy to be a religious today?"

When I was ordained twelve years after I entered the Society of Jesus, my parents were asked by Company, then the magazine of the New York Province, to share their reflections. My parents, who had great misgivings when I entered, agreed to do this, much to my surprise. Mom was a woman of many words, though she wrote none of them down. Dad was a man of few words, and we still cherish those few he committed to writing.

Their reflections ended with this: "As much as we try, we will probably never understand his ministry in a way that he would want us to understand it. In those twelve years we have come to the realization that his vocation, like our faith, is given as a gift."

Their words could very well be my own today. No matter what I have been asked to do as a Jesuit--as student, teacher, priest, architect and most recently administrator for the Society, or where I have been asked to go--Syracuse, New York, Boston, Washington, Scranton, Sydney, Australia, I have found a home in the Society of Jesus, or more precisely, in the company of Jesus, a band of men across the globe gathered around Jesus, bold enough to bear His name, in service to God's people.

To find myself at home in the company of Jesus is the gift still beyond my understanding. But it has made me glad.
