"What makes me happy to be a religious today?"

On a September morning 50 years ago I entered a classroom filled with 38 high school boys. They were juniors at St. Joe's Prep and I was their rookie German teacher. From that first day I felt right at home, and I have served in the apostolate of education all my life.

Of course, I was keen on sharing with students my enthusiasm for languages and cultures, but the vocation of being a teaching religious also allowed me to enter into the lives of the young and to be ready to accompany them throughout the course of their lives. I have been with them at moments of decision, trial and triumph. I have watched them become parents, grandparents, religious and priests.

As I made my own journey, the Society of Jesus has encouraged me to do whatever I needed to be a more effective apostle. It has drawn out of me potential I never knew I had. It has taken me to places around the world which I never dreamed of seeing. I have been blest in finding meaning and purpose in everything I have been asked to do. Further, the Society has provided me with a marvelous band of brothers, among whom are my dearest friends.

Like everyone, I have experienced testing and loss, but in my 58 years in the Society I have found that sadness does not last long if I sustain an abiding sense of gratitude. For me gratitude is the gateway to happiness.
