In Oct. 2014, Dennis Baker, SJ, John Peck, SJ, and Sean Toole, SJ, were ordained deacons at ceremonies that took place at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, Calif.
Dennis and John are both currently students at Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. Sean is a student at Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara in Berkeley, Calif.
They join a total of 31 Jesuits nationwide who were ordained to the diaconate last fall.
For a Jesuit, ordination to the diaconate is a key part of formation that is required prior to priestly ordination in the Society of Jesus. These men are now authorized to proclaim the Word of God, to preach and to preside at the sacraments of baptism and marriage, and at the rite of Christian burial.
They will continue to gain pastoral experience over the next few months before being ordained priests along with fellow Jesuit deacon, Brent Otto, SJ, in June.
