New Appointments & Leadership

Below are some of the recent appointments in our provinces:

Fr. Richard A. McGowan, SJ, was appointed treasurer of the Maryland Province, beginning in summer of 2018. Fr. McGowan is currently an associate professor of economics at Boston College. Fr. McGowan’s expertise in business administration, his skill as a teacher, and his apostolic generosity and availability are but some of the gifts he brings to the Office of Treasurer and the province staff.

Dr. Mark Nemec was named the 9th president of Fairfield University. A nationally recognized leader in higher education, Dr. Nemec is a graduate of Loyola High School, a Jesuit college preparatory, in Los Angeles. He earned a PhD in political science and a MA in education from the University of Michigan, as well as a BA in English at Yale. Prior to this position, he served as dean of the William and Catherine V. Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies at the University of Chicago.

On October 25, Fr. Robert Pecoraro, SJ, was installed as president of Cheverus High School in Portland, Maine. Prior to this position, he served as vice-president of mission and identity at Canisius High School and president of Xavier High School in Chuuk, Micronesia. Before arriving at Cheverus, Fr. Pecoraro was an adjunct faculty member at Christ the King Seminary, the major seminary for the Diocese of Buffalo, teaching a course entitled Transformative Leadership for the 21st Century Church and also serving on the spiritual direction team.

Grace Cotter Regan was named the first female lay president of Boston College High School. She has served as head of school at St. Mary’s High School in Lynn, Mass., since 2012 and was previously the provincial assistant and executive director of advancement for the New England Province. Regan served in leadership roles in advancement and alumni outreach at Boston College and the College of the Holy Cross. Her son, Bartley, was a graduate of BC High’s Class of 2012. She is the daughter of the late legendary BC High football coach, Jim Cotter.

Fr. James Van Dyke, SJ, was named the next president of Georgetown Prep, effective July 1, 2018. Fr. Van Dyke was the founding principal of Cristo Rey Atlanta Jesuit High School. He currently serves as director of Ignatian programs and faculty formation at Canisius High School in Buffalo, and previously held a similar role at Xavier High School in New York City. He also taught theology at numerous secondary schools, including Canisius, Xavier, McQuaid Jesuit and Regis, and has served on the board of trustees at Fordham Prep and Regis.
