Jesuit Father George B. Murray died on Nov. 18, 2013, at Campion Center in Weston, Mass. He was born on April 17, 1931, in Minneapolis, Minn., and entered the Society of Jesus on Sept. 1, 1953, at Milford, Ohio.

Jesuit Father George B. Murray died on Nov. 18, 2013, at Campion Center in Weston, Mass.

He was born on April 17, 1931, in Minneapolis, Minn., and entered the Society of Jesus on Sept. 1, 1953, at Milford, Ohio. He was ordained on June 17, 1965, at Colombiere College in Clarkston, Mich., and took final vows on April 25, 1976. Fr. Murray attended St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland and John Carroll University before joining the Jesuits.

As a Jesuit, Fr. Murray earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Xavier University, a licentiate degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in biology from St. Louis University. He studied physiology at the University of Chicago, from 1960-1961. He studied theology at West Baden College and earned a S.T.B. from Bellarmine School of Theology in N. Aurora, Ill. Fr. Murray earned a Master of Science degree in neurophysiology from the University of Montreal and a doctorate in medicine from Creighton University. In 1978, Fr. Murray received certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

During regency, Fr. Murray was a teacher of biology and physics at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland from 1959-1960. He was an intern at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha from 1972-1973, a fellow in clinical psychiatry at Harvard Medical School from 1973-1976, did his residency in psychiatry from 1973-1976 and was chief resident from 1975-1976 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. From 1976 until 2012, Fr. Murray was an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, director of the Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the director of the Psychiatric Fellowship Program at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.  This past year, Fr. Murray was praying for the Church and the Society at Campion Health Center in Weston, Mass.
